How much insulation do you actually need?
This is the question that moves the price the most, and the honest answer depends on what sits on the other side of the wall. Here is how the three build types compare.
Single layer, no insulation
One sheet of steel with nothing behind it. It is the cheapest door on the truck and it is genuinely fine for a detached garage or a shop you never heat. It will be the loudest option, and the garage will sit at whatever temperature it is outside.
Two layer, polystyrene core
Rigid foam board bonded behind the steel skin. It takes a real bite out of the noise, adds stiffness so the door shrugs off bumps, and costs noticeably less than the top tier. There is a reason this is the middle of the road.
Three layer, polyurethane
Foam injected between two steel skins so it expands and fills every gap. The quietest and most rigid door you can buy, and the one we recommend whenever the garage is attached, heated, has a bedroom above it, or gets used as a gym or a workshop.
A quick rule of thumb: if the garage shares a wall or a ceiling with a room you heat, an insulated door pays you back in comfort and in how quiet the house stays at six in the morning. If it is a standalone garage at the back of the lot, put that money into the door itself instead.
How material, insulation, and style work together
Material drives both look and maintenance: insulated steel is the durable, low-maintenance favorite in the Northwest's wet climate, while wood-look composite gives the warmth of wood without the upkeep.
Insulation matters most for attached garages and rooms above, where a higher R-value keeps the space comfortable, cuts energy loss, and runs quieter.
